Question from a satsanggi:

Bhai Ji,

Gurbani mentions about Adam. Can you please enlighten in what context is Adam mentioned in  SGGS. Is Adam recognized as the first creation of man?

SGGS says we are all made in the image of the Creator.

We know that God has no form, so in what context or manner are we made in the image of God.

Appreciate your help. Kindly state the Shabad and Ang number so I can refer to.

Thank you Bhai Ji.

Bhai Manjeet’s response:

SGGS Angg 1161, Bhagat Kabeer Ji says..

“Baba Adam ko kich nadar dikhaiyee ; Un bhi bhist ghaneri paiyee.”

ਬਾਬਾ ਆਦਮ ਕਉ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਦਿਖਾਈ

(The Lord bestowed some grace upon Adam who enjoyed great happiness in paradise).

You will notice it was only “kich nadar”.

SGGS Ji makes no mention of Adam being the first created man.

In fact Gurbani tells us that no one knows when creation started. Japji Sahib tells us only God knows..

” ja Karta sirthee ko sajey aape jaane soyee.”

ਜਾ ਕਰਤਾ ਸਿਰਠੀ ਕਉ ਸਾਜੇ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਸੋਈ ॥

(The Creator who created this creation-only He Himself knows).

I have written an article on this Shabad by Bhagat Kabeer Ji.

Bhagat Kabeer Ji’s Fascinating View on Heaven ….

Where does it say in SGGS Ji that we are made in the image of God.?

Gurbani does not say that. Only a true saint becomes God like i.e. the saint acquires so many rabbi gunn that he becomes the image of God.

“Dass aninn mero nijh roop” (Ang 1252).

ਦਾਸ ਅਨਿੰਨ ਮੇਰੋ ਨਿਜ ਰੂਪ ॥

(Says God: my slave is devoted only to me; he is in my very image)

Yes. Guru Arjun Dev Ji tells us that Guru Nanak Dev Ji was…

” Gur Nanak Dev Govind roop” (1192).

ਗੁਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਰੂਪ ॥੮॥੧॥

(Guru Nanak Dayv is the Embodiment of the Lord of the Universe. ||8||1||)

That is very different from saying man is made in the image of God.
