SGGS Ang 18

Raag Sri Raag

Gurbani uses the word “supna” many times. It is a very profound metaphor to describe the fleeting and perishable nature of all things. A supna happens when one is asleep. When he awakes, the supna (dream) breaks. While the supna was on it looked real.
Gurbani says it is foolish to attach yourself to any dream. It ends very fast. Only Naam (Nirankar) is Real.

Guru Nanak Ji says,

“Jag supna baaji banee khin me khel khelaye.” (Ang 18).

The world is a drama staged in a dream. In an instant, the Play is completed. In this dream, those attached to Naam, Unite with Him, while the remaining leave empty handed.

“Sanjogi mil Eksay vijogi uth jaaiye”

In His Bani, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji uses the supna metaphor many times.

“Kaho Nanak thirr kich nahi supne jio sansar.” (Ang 1429).

The tragedy of man’s superficial life becomes very stark when he awakes with a start from the supna. Bhagat Kabir Ji says,

“Kaho Kabeer tabh hi nar jaage; jamm ka dandh moondh me laage.” (Ang 870).

Man only awakes from his dream like state (of ignorance), when the Messenger of Death strikes him on the head with his club.

Guru Amardas Ji says,

“Tabh nar soota jaagiya sirr dandh lagga baho bhaar.” (Ang 1418).

The sleeping man wakes (from his dream) when he is hit on his head by a heavy club.

Gurbani is the Only Reality. Reflect upon Bani and Connect with the Divine Real One within yourselves.
