The sole focus of the Gurus and Bhagats was on Naam, i.e. Attributes of God.
There are many Scriptures in the world which contain sprinkling of Naam, but at the same time also contain many make believe stories, and other worldly information. Some even contain spells of tantra and black magic and tell you how and with what precision, rituals should be conducted.
Bhagat Kabir Ji, for example, at Angg 329 says the Simritees are spawned out of the Vedas. These Simritees bring along a chain and rope (to bind their followers, instead of leading them towards liberation).
“Bedh ki putree Simiritee bhai; saankal jevhree leh hai ayee.”
Further, Bhagat Ji says, with their rituals and false stories, they have become a snake which has devoured the world.
“Sa saapan hoye jag ko khayee.”
The Gurus and the Bhagats were aware of these Scriptures. For them, only Naam stated in those Scriptures was True. All else was false, and of no worth.
Thus Guru Ji says in the first two lines of this Shabad, the Simritees, the Vedas and the Puranas and other Books which declare themselves to be Scriptures; besides Naam in them, all else is false.
(My translation and interpretation of the above two lines is different from the views stated in the net. The English version of these two lines does not agree with the Punjabi version. My views are with respect, different from both the English and Punjabi versions).
“Simrit bedh puran pukaran pothiyan; Naam bina sabh kurh galli hoshiyan.”
In contrast, the Saints have only Infinite Naam in their minds; and in Sadhsanggat birth and death are erased.
“Naam Nidhaan Apaar Bhagta mann vassey; janam maran moh dukh sadhu sang nassey.” (Rahao).
(If you do not imbibe Naam within yourself), and indulge in attachment, conflict and egotism you shall surely weep and cry; separated from Naam, one will never find any peace.
“Moh baad ahangkaar sarpar runeiya ;sukh na paayen mool Naam vishuniya.”
Man cries out “mine, mine” and gets tied in bondage; entangled in maya, he gets reincarnated in heaven and hell.
“Meri meri dhaar bandhan bandheya; narak surag avtaar maya dhandeiya.”
After intense searches, the Essence of Reality is understood; (that) without Naam there can be no peace at all and the mortal will surely fail.
“Sodhat sodhat sodh tatt bichareiya; Naam bina nahi sukh sarpar haareiya.”
Multitudes come and go; they die and die again, and are reincarnated; without understanding, they are useless and they wander in reincarnation.
“Aave jahe anek marr marr janamatey; bin bujhe sabh vaad johnee bhramatey.”
They alone join the Sadhsanggat unto whom the Lord grants His Mercy; they chant and meditate on the Amrit Naam.
“Jin ko bhaye Dya tinni Sadhu sang bheya; Amrit Har ka Naam tinni janni jap lehya.”
Uncounted millions, and endless numbers search for Him; one to whom He gives understanding sees God near at hand.
“Khojay kot asankh bahut anant ke; jis bujhaye Aap nerha Tis he.”
May I never forget You Lord – please bless me with Your Naam; Nanak’s heartfelt desire is to sing Your Glorious Praises day and night.
“Vissar nahi Dataar Aapna Naam deho; Gunn gavha dinn raat Nanak chao eho.”
