Raag Tilang M.1

According to Macaulliffe, Guru Nanak Dev Ji revealed this Shabad at Peshawar. A large number of Pathans were so overwhelmed, that they accepted Guru Nanak Dev Ji as their Guru, and adopted a way of life in accordance with Guru Ji’s Teachings.

The Shabad is fairly long and has 10 padas of two lines each.

Guru Ji starts by telling us the world is God’s Garden and He, the Unfathomable One, tends to it.

“Jin Kia tin dekhia kia kahiai re bhai; Ape janai kare ap jin vari hai lai”

In the rahao, Guru Ji says we should always sing Praises of the Lord. Such singing brings eternal peace.

“Raisa Pyare da Raisa jit sada sukh hoyee.” (rahao).

Raisa in Arabic means Leader, while in Persian, it means Wealth. Here the word means God’s Wealth i.e. Naam. Sing His Praises using God’s Wealth (Naam Dhan), and you will get eternal peace.

In pada 2, Guru Ji says the soul bride who does not enjoy the Love of her Husband Lord regrets and lives a life of misery.

“Jin Rang Kant na ravia sa pachho re tani; hath pachhore sir dhunai jab rain vihani”

Pada 3 tells us regret gets you nowhere, you can only sing His Praises in the remote event you get another chance (life).

“Pachhotava na milai jab chukaigi sari; fa fir Piara raviai jab avaigi vari.”

Pada 4 tells us of a jeev isteri who sees other soul brides happily United, and realises she cannot envy anyone as it is her own lack of merits which is the cause of misery.

“Kant lia sohagani mai te vadhvi eh; Se gun mujhai na avni kai ji dos dhareh”

In pada 5, she decides to go to satsangat to find the True Path.

“Jin sakhi Saho ravia tin puchhugi jae; Pae lagao benti karao leugi panth batae”

Pada 6 says, if she understands His Hukam, and has fear of breaching it, she gets inner fragrance, and attracts the Lord’s Love.

“Hukam pachhanai Nanka baho chandan lavai; Gun kaman kaman karai tao piare kao pavai”

Pada 7 tells us the Union is in her heart, and by mere talk, such Union never takes place.

“Jo dil milia so mil rahia milia kahiai re soi; Je bahutera lochiai bati mel na hoi”

In pada 8, Guru Ji tells us it is our love for God which leads to merger and with Gur Parsad one gets to Unite with the Intuitive Lord within us.

“Dhat milai fun dhat kao liv livai kao dhavai; Gur parsadi janiai tao anbhao pavai”

In pada 9 Guru Ji tells us of the donkey like man who does not appreciate the inner garden of soft leaves (i.e. he does not realise Naam – God is within himself).

“Pana vari hoe ghar khar sar na janai; Rasia hovai musak ka tab ful pachhanai”

Pada 10 concludes by telling us, if you drink in Amrit Naam, your wanderings cease and you lovingly Merge and Blend into the Lord and obtain the Supreme Sublime Status (Sahaj Avastha).

“Apio pivai jo Nanka bharam bharam samavai; Sehje sehje mil rahai amra pad pavai.”

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਕਿਆ ਕਹੀਐ ਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ (ਇਹ ਜਗਤ) ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸੇ ਨੇ ਹੀ (ਸਦਾ) ਇਸ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ । ਇਹ ਕਿਹਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ (ਕਿ ਉਹ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ।
The One who created the world watches over it; what more can we say, O Siblings of Destiny?

ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਕਰੇ ਆਪਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਵਾੜੀ ਹੈ ਲਾਈ ॥੧॥
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ-ਬਗ਼ੀਚੀ ਲਾਈ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਇਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਲੋੜਾਂ) ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਆਪ (ਉਹ ਲੋੜਾਂ ਪੂਰੀਆਂ) ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
He Himself knows, and He Himself acts; He laid out the garden of the world. ||1||

ਰਾਇਸਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਕਾ ਰਾਇਸਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਹੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ (ਭਾਈ)! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ।ਰਹਾਉ।
Savor the story, the story of the Beloved Lord, which brings a lasting peace. ||Pause||

ਜਿਨਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਕੰਤੁ ਨ ਰਾਵਿਆ ਸਾ ਪਛੋ ਰੇ ਤਾਣੀ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਾਲ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ, ਉਹ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਪਛੁਤਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ
She who does not enjoy the Love of her Husband Lord, shall come to regret and repent in the end.

ਹਾਥ ਪਛੋੜੈ ਸਿਰੁ ਧੁਣੈ ਜਬ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਣੀ ॥੨॥
ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਤ ਬੀਤ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੱਥ ਮਲਦੀ ਹੈ, ਸਿਰ ਮਾਰਦੀ ਹੈ ।੨।
She wrings her hands, and bangs her head, when the night of her life has passed away. ||2||

ਪਛੋਤਾਵਾ ਨਾ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਬ ਚੂਕੈਗੀ ਸਾਰੀ ॥
ਪਰ) ਜਦੋਂ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਰਾਤ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਏਗੀ, ਤਦੋਂ ਪਛੁਤਾਵਾ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਕੁਝ ਹਾਸਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ
Nothing comes from repentance, when the game is already finished.

ਤਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਰਾਵੀਐ ਜਬ ਆਵੈਗੀ ਵਾਰੀ ॥੩॥
ਉਸ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਫਿਰ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ (ਮੁੜ ਕਦੇ) ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਵਾਰੀ ਮਿਲੇਗੀ ।੩।
She shall have the opportunity to enjoy her Beloved, only when her turn comes again. ||3||

ਕੰਤੁ ਲੀਆ ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਮੈ ਤੇ ਵਧਵੀ ਏਹ ॥
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਚੰਗੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ (ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਆਂ) ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮੈਥੋਂ ਚੰਗੀਆਂ ਹਨ
The happy soul-bride attains her Husband Lord – she is so much better than I am.

ਸੇ ਗੁਣ ਮੁਝੈ ਨ ਆਵਨੀ ਕੈ ਜੀ ਦੋਸੁ ਧਰੇਹ ॥੪॥
(ਜੇਹੜੇ ਗੁਣ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹਨ) ਉਹ ਗੁਣ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪੈਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ, (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਦੋਸ਼ ਥੱਪਾਂ (ਕਿ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਕਿਉਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ)? ।੪।
I have none of her merits or virtues; whom should I blame? ||4||

ਜਿਨੀ ਸਖੀ ਸਹੁ ਰਾਵਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਪੂਛਉਗੀ ਜਾਏ ॥
(ਹੁਣ) ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸਹੇਲੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਪੱੁਛਾਂਗੀ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ
I shall go and ask those sisters who have enjoyed their Husband Lord.

ਪਾਇ ਲਗਉ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਉ ਲੇਉਗੀ ਪੰਥੁ ਬਤਾਏ ॥੫॥
ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨੀ ਲੱਗਾਂਗੀ, ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਾਂਗੀ, (ਤੇ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ) ਰਸਤਾ ਪੁੱਛ ਲਵਾਂਗੀ ।੫।
I touch their feet, and ask them to show me the Path. ||5||

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਭਉ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਲਾਵੈ ॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਦੋਂ (ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਦੀ) ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਨੂੰ (ਜਿੰਦ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਸੁਗੰਧੀ ਬਣਾਂਦੀ ਹ
She who understands the Hukam of His Command, O Nanak, applies the Fear of God as her sandalwood oil;

ਗੁਣ ਕਾਮਣ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਕਰੈ ਤਉ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਕਉ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੬॥
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਸਰੀਰ ਉਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ) ਚੰਦਨ ਲਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ (ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ) ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਟੂਣੇ ਬਣਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।੬।
she charms her Beloved with her virtue, and so obtains Him. ||6||

ਜੋ ਦਿਲਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਕਹੀਐ ਰੇ ਸੋਈ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਆਖਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ
She who meets her Beloved in her heart, remains united with Him; this is truly called union.

ਜੇ ਬਹੁਤੇਰਾ ਲੋਚੀਐ ਬਾਤੀ ਮੇਲੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੭॥
ਨਿਰੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ) ਮਿਲਾਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ, ਭਾਵੇਂ ਕਿਤਨੀ ਹੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹੀਏ ।੭।
As much as she may long for Him, she shall not meet Him through mere words. ||7||

ਧਾਤੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਫੁਨਿ ਧਾਤੁ ਕਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਿਵੈ ਕਉ ਧਾਵੈ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਸੋਨਾ ਆਦਿਕ) ਧਾਤ (ਕੁਠਾਲੀ ਵਿਚ ਗਲ ਕੇ) ਮੁੜ (ਹੋਰ) (ਸੋਨੇ-) ਧਾਤ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਪਿਆਰ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਲ ਦੌੜਦਾ ਹੈ (ਖਿੱਚ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)
As metal melts into metal again, so does love melt into love.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਤਉ ਅਨਭਉ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੮॥
ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਸੂਝ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਡਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੮।
By Guru’s Grace, this understanding is obtained, and then, one obtains the Fearless Lord. ||8||

ਪਾਨਾ ਵਾੜੀ ਹੋਇ ਘਰਿ ਖਰੁ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਾਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਿਆਰੀ (ਹਿਰਦੇ-) ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਖੋਤਾ (ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ ਦੀ) ਕਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ
There may be an orchard of betel nut trees in the garden, but the donkey does not appreciate its value.

ਰਸੀਆ ਹੋਵੈ ਮੁਸਕ ਕਾ ਤਬ ਫੂਲੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥੯॥
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੁਗੰਧੀ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਫੁਲਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੯।
If someone savors a fragrance, then he can truly appreciate its flower. ||9||

ਅਪਿਉ ਪੀਵੈ ਜੋ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ (ਦੇ ਮਨ) ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਅੰਦਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ
One who drinks in the ambrosia, O Nanak, abandons his doubts and wanderings.

ਸਹਜੇ ਸਹਜੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹੈ ਅਮਰਾ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧੦॥੧॥
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਦਰਜਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁਕਦੀ ।੧੦।੧।
Easily and intuitively, he remains blended with the Lord, and obtains the immortal status. ||10||1||

Guru Nanak Dev Ji in Raag Tilang – 725
