A highly mystical Shabad. Lovely beyond words. Fascinating. Guru Ji uses the imagery of a deer, a fish, a nightingale, and a she snake. Deer lives on land, the fish in water, the bird soars in the skies, and the snake lives in furrows inside the earth. Every possible space is covered. No matter where you reside, the Lord is there.

Some scholars take the view, that these animals represent different avastha of persons. No matter what your avastha is, with Gur Parsad and the Lord’s Grace, you can access to the Lord.

If I were a deer living in the forest, carefully picking out roots and fruits to eat; with the Guru’s Grace, I would meet my Beloved. I am eternally grateful for this.

“Harni hova bann bassa kandh moolh chun khaoo; Gur Parsadi mera Saho miley vaar vaar hao jaoo jio.”

The jeev isteri says. I am a trader of the Name of the All Pervading Lord; Your Name is my unique and special merchandise.

“Mai banjaran Ram ki; Tera Naam vakhar vapaar ji.” (rahao).

If I were a nightingale living in a mango grove, I would lovingly contemplate upon the Shabad; I would intuitively meet my Beloved, whose blessed Vision is incomparably beautiful.

“Kokil hova ambh bassa sahaj Shabad bichaar; sahaj subhai mera Saho milay Darshan roop apaar.”

If I were a fish living in the waters, I would still remember the Lord who watches over all beings and creatures; my Husband who dwells here, and the shore beyond, I would fling out my arms and meet Him in loving embrace.

“Machli hova jall bassa jee jantt sabh saar; urvaar paar mera Saho vassey hao milogi bah pasaar.”

If I were a she snake, living in the ground, the Shabad would still dwell in my mind and my fears would be dispelled; Nanak says, they are eternal soul brides whose Light merges with His Divine Light.

“Naagin hova dhar vassa Shabad vassey bhao jaaye; Nanak sada suhagnee jin Joti Jote samaaiye.”
