Raag Suhi M.5

A Sikh asks some very profound questions. It is natural for such questions to well up on the spiritual ladder. If I am bound by karmas, when did my karmas begin? If karmas began with Creation, when there was no Creation, what actions were being done by anyone at all?

The Satgurus tell us that the answers to these and many other questions are beyond our grasp. What a Sikh should do, is sing Praises of the Lord, accept His Will as sweet (i.e. accept His entire Creation and the Will by which He operates as good). Slowly you will recognize and understand the Hukam of His Will.

“Kaho Nanak jinn Hukam pechataa; Prabh Sahib ka tinn bhed jataa.” (Ang 885).

As you keep Praising Him, with Gur Parsad you will merge into Him. His mysteries will be known to you, although you will never be able to put “antt” to Him. As you merge and become part of Him, and know His mysteries, you will also not reveal His mysteries just as the Lord Himself does not.

Anyone wishing to know these mysteries has to take the Sharan of a Satguru, sing His Praises, and with Gur Parsad, merge into Him.

When nothing existed, what deeds were being done?; what karmas caused anyone to be born at all?

“Jab kach na theeyo tab kya karta kavan karam kar aaya.”

Guru Ji answers. It is His Play and He sets it in motion, and He Himself beholds it. He created all Creation.

“Aapna khel Aap kar dekhe Thakur rachan racheiya.”

In the rahao, upon the Guru’s instructions, the Sikh surrenders completely and confesses his inability to do anything and accepts God is the Real Doer.

“Mere Raam Rai mujh te kachu na hoyee; Aape Karta Aap Karaye Sarab Nirantar soyee.” (rahao).

If my accounts were to be judged, I would never be saved; My body is perishable and ignorant.

“Gantee ganee na chutay kathoo kachi deh eiyanee.”

Take pity on me O Creator Lord, Your forgiving Grace is singular and unique.

“Kirpa karo Prabh Karneharey Teri baksh niralee.”

You created all beings and creatures. Each and every heart meditates upon You; Your state and expanse are known only to You. The value of Your Creative Omnipotence cannot be estimated.

“Jee jantt sabh Tere kitay ghat ghat Tuhi dhiaeyeh; Teri gatt mitt Tu hai kudrat keem na paaiyeh.”

I am worthless, foolish, thoughtless and ignorant. I know nothing about good actions and righteous living; have Mercy upon Nanak that I may sing Your Praises and accept Your Will as sweet.

“Nirgunn mugadh ajaan agyianee karam dharam nahi jaana; Dya karo Nanak gunn gavhe mitha lagge Tera Bhana.”

A Sikh deeply ponders about karmas. When creation did not exist, what deeds were done by the jeev? What karmas caused me to be born?
“Jab kach na sio tab kya karta kavan karam kar aaya.”

The answers to these questions are beyond our fathom.

What the Sikh has been told by his Guru is that, the Lord set His Play in motion, and He Himself watches over all those created by Him.
“Apna khel Aap kar dekhe Thakur rachan rachaiya.”

The Sikh exclaims. My Lord King, I realise now that I have no power to do anything by myself.
“Mere Raam Rai mujh te kachu na hoyee.”

The Creator Himself sits deep within all and drives all to their various tasks (it is haumai that makes us think we are capable of doing anything by ourselves).
“Aape Karta Aap karaye sarab nirantar soyee.”

As we do acts in haumai with this foolish and ignorant body, we create karmas, and I would never be saved if my accounts (lekhas) were to be judged.
“Gannati ganni na chutay kathu kachi deh eiaani.”

The Sikh pleads for His Mercy to wipe out his accounts. Lord, please take pity upon me. You have a Unique Forgiving Nature.
“Kirpa karo Prabh Karnehare Teri Baksh Niralee.”
