Raag Assa M.1
A fascinating Astpadhi which lists out what needs to be done by a Sikh if he hopes for Darshan.
The Shabad is written in a unique way. The Sikh prays to God in humility.
You are the Giver and I am a mere beggar. Please give me Your blessed Darshan. This is the first line of the rahao. In the second line of the rahao, the Guru replies to the Sikh pleading for Darshan. He is told to become a gurmukh, meditate upon, and drench yourself with Naam, in the temple of your mind.
“Tum Dato ham jachika Har Darshan dijjay; gurmukh Naam dhiaayeh mann mandar bhijjay.” (Rahao).
The rest of the Shabad is Divine instruction to the Sikh as to how he should conduct himself if he aspires for Darshan.
Still the desires of the mind, and you can cross over the terrifying world ocean with the Truth; (enshrine this in your mind) From the very beginning, throughout the ages, You have been the Merciful Lord and Master – I have taken Your Sanctuary.
“Mansa manne samaaileh bhaojal Sach tarnaa; Aad jugaad Dyaal Tu Thakur Teri Sharna.”
The rahao has been explained.
Only when you abandon greed for perishables will you start to recognize the Truth; as you get absorbed in the Guru’s Shabad, you get Supreme realization.
“Kurha lalach chodiye tao Sach pehchaney; Gur ke Shabad samaaiyeh Parmarath jaane.”
The greedy mind rules over you pursuing further greed; the gurmukh eliminates his greed, and has a loving, peaceful relationship with God.
“Eh mann raja lobhiya lobhto lobhayee; gurmukh lobh nivariye Har seyo bann aaye.”
How can one ever reap profits by planting seeds in barren land?; the manmukh does not get drenched with Truth, and his lies get buried further in falsehoods.
“Kallar kheti bijiye kyo laha paave; manmukh Sach na bhijjaiyee kurh kurho gadaave.”
Renounce greed O blind ones, it brings great pain; as the True Lord comes to dwell in the mind, the poisonous ego is conquered.
“Lalach chodho andhiyo lalach dukh bharee; Sacho Sahib mann vasse haumai bikh maree.”
Brothers, renounce evil and your misgivings (that maya can save you), you will get plundered on that path; night and day focus upon Naam in the Guru’s Sanctuary.
“Dubida chodh kovatree mushogay bhai; ahiniss Naam salahiye Satgur Sarnayi.”
The self willed manmukh is a rock, a stone. His life is accursed and useless; no matter how long you keep the stone in water, it remains dry at it’s core.
“Manmukh pathar sailh hai dhrig jeevan feeka; jall me keta rakhiye abh antar sooka.”
The Lord’s Name is the True Treasure, given by the Guru; Nanak says, never forsake the Naam. Churn (i.e. recite it repeatedly) and drink in the Ambrosial Nectar.
“Har ka Naam Nidhaan hai Puray Gur deeya; Nanak Naam na visray math Amrit peeya.’
