A Divinely delightful Shabad by Guru Nanak Dev. Guru Ji talks about love for God using symbols and imagery often used in SGGS Ji.

Guru Ji gives 5 examples of love.

1. The chakvi and chakva.

2. The lotus flower and the rays of the sun.

3. The chatrik and its legendary love for a dewdrop.

4. The fish and its love for water.

5. The love of the soul bride for her Husband Lord.

The chakvi and chakva always move in pairs and are often found near river banks. When night falls, they invariably get separated. They do not sleep the entire night, and the mournful cry of the chakvi seeking her beloved, cuts through the night in the forests. When dawn breaks, she is able to see her beloved chakva, and she bows in gratitude to the sun for reuniting her. This imagery is used to show the jeev isteri who loses sight of her Husband Lord in the darkness of spiritual ignorance. As she gets enlightened by the Guru’s Shabad, she bows in gratitude to the Guru (Sun), for reuniting her with the Beloved Lord.

The chakvi desires no sleep and cannot rest without her mate; when the sun rises, and she sees her beloved, she bows again and again in gratitude; I am happy to be in love with my Lord who is my Support; I cannot live without Him even for an instant, such is my thirst for Him.

“Chakvi nainn neend na chahe bin Pir neend na payee; surh chare Prio dekhay nainee niv niv laage payee; Pir bhave prem sakhayee; Tis bin ghari nahi jag jiva aisi pias tisai” (rahao).

The lotus in the pool blossoms forth naturally with the rays of the sun in the sky; such is the love for my Beloved, I pray for the merger of His Divine Light with mine.

“Sarvar kamal kiran aakasee bigsay sahaj subhai; Pritam preet banni abh aisee Joti Jote milaiyee.”

Thirsty for water, the chatrik wails Prio Prio; the thundering clouds rain down in ten directions (yet), its thirst is only quenched if it catches a dewdrop in its mouth.

“Chatrik jall bin Prio Prio teray billap kare billayee; ghanhar ghor daso dis barse bin jall pyaas na jayee.”

The fish lives in water from which it was born. It endures pain and happiness according to its past actions; it cannot survive without water even for an instant, and her life and death depend on it.

“Meen nivaas upjay jall hi te sukh dukh purab kamayee; khin til reh na sakay palh jalh bin maran jiwan tis tayee.”

The bride soul is separated from her Husband Lord who lives in His Own Country, (Sachkhand) and only Word through the Guru’s Shabad reaches Him; she gathers Virtues and enshrines God in her heart, and colored in His love, she is happy.

“Dhan vandhi Pir des nivasee Sache Gur peh Shabad patahee; gunn sangreh Prabh ridhay nivasee bhagat ratti harkhayee.”

Although all cry out Prio Prio – Beloved Beloved, only those who are pleasing to the Guru, find the Beloved; the Beloved is always with us, through the Truth and His Grace, one merges in Union.

“Prio Prio kare sabhe hai jetee Gur bhave Prio payee; Prio naley sad hi Sach sangay nadree melh milayee.”

He is the Life of the very soul and pervades each and every heart; by Guru’s Grace, He is revealed within the home of the heart, and one intuitively blends into Him.

“Sabh me jio jio hai soyee ghat ghat rehiya samayee; Gur Parsad ghar hi pargaseya sahaje sahaj samayee.”

Lord, Giver of Peace, only You can resolve all Your Affairs; with the Guru’s Grace, one finds the Husband Lord within her own home, and all her fires (of maya, greed) are quenched.

“Aapna kaaj sawarho Aape Sukhdatey Gosain; Gur Parsad ghar hi Pir payaa tao Nanak tapatt bujhayee.”
