Raag Gauree (Gauri) M.5

A Sikh who has seen and tasted the pleasures of maya pleads with the Guru. Despite all the attractions of maya, my mind is not at peace. Please lead me to True happiness and remove my greed for worldliness. This is the 1st rahao. As the Shabad develops, the 2nd rahao which comes at the end of the Shabad, gives the answer to True happiness.

The Sikh says:

I have gazed on the many facets of maya in it’s various colours; with pen and paper I have written clever things; I have seen what it is to be a chief, a king, an emperor; yet, my mind was not truly satisfied; O Saints (Guru Ji) show me the path to peace; where my thirst (for worldliness) gets quenched and the mind is appeased. (rahao).

“Baho rang maia baho bidh pekhi; kalam kagad sianap lekhi; mahar maluk hoe dekhia khan; ta te nahi man tariptan;”

“So sukh mo kao sant batavhu; Tarishna bujhai man tariptavho” (rahao).

Horses as fast as the wind, elephants to ride on; sandalwood oils, beautiful women adorning the bed; actors in dramas, singing in theaters; with all these my mind was not content.

Thrones in royal courts, with beautiful carpets; all sorts of luscious fruits and beautiful gardens; the thrill of the chase and kingly pleasures; the mind was never light and happy by these illusory diversions.

In their Kindness, the Saints told me of the True One; from where I received all comforts and joy; in Sadhsanggat I sang Praises of the Lord; it was my great fortune that led me to this.

One who has the Wealth of the Lord (Naam) is truly happy; by God’s Grace I have been led to Sadhsanggat (second rahao).

ਗਉੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
Gauree Gwaarayree, Fifth Mehla:

ਬਹੁ ਰੰਗ ਮਾਇਆ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਪੇਖੀ ॥
ਮੈਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਰੰਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਈ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੋਂਹਦੀ ਵੇਖੀ ਹੈ ।
I have gazed upon the many forms of Maya, in so many ways.

ਕਲਮ ਕਾਗਦ ਸਿਆਨਪ ਲੇਖੀ ॥
ਕਾਗ਼ਜ਼ ਕਲਮ (ਲੈ ਕੇ ਕਈਆਂ ਨੇ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਵਿਦਵਤਾ ਵਾਲੇ ਲੇਖ ਲਿਖੇ ਹਨ (ਮਾਇਆ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਦਵਤਾ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ ਮੋਹ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ) ।
With pen and paper, I have written clever things.

ਮਹਰ ਮਲੂਕ ਹੋਇ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਖਾਨ ॥
(ਕਈਆਂ ਨੇ) ਚੌਧਰੀ ਸੁਲਤਾਨ ਖਾਨ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਵੇਖ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ।
I have seen what it is to be a chief, a king, and an emperor,

ਤਾ ਤੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਨ ॥੧॥
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ (ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ) ਮਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਿਆ ।੧।
but they do not satisfy the mind. ||1||

ਸੋ ਸੁਖੁ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਸੰਤ ਬਤਾਵਹੁ ॥
ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਦੱਸੋ (ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਏ ।
Show me that peace, O Saints,

ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵਹੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ ! ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਤੋਖੀ ਬਣਾ ਦਿਓ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
which will quench my thirst and satisfy my mind. ||1||Pause||

ਅਸੁ ਪਵਨ ਹਸਤਿ ਅਸਵਾਰੀ ॥
ਹਾਥੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਤੇ ਹਵਾ ਵਰਗੇ ਤੇਜ਼ ਘੋੜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਸਵਾਰੀ (ਕਈਆਂ ਨੇ ਕਰ ਵੇਖੀ ਹੈ),
You may have horses as fast as the wind, elephants to ride on,

ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਸੇਜ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
ਅਤਰ ਤੇ ਚੰਦਨ (ਵਰਤ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਹੈ), ਸੁੰਦਰ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੀ ਸੇਜ (ਮਾਣ ਵੇਖੀ) ਹੈ,
sandalwood oil, and beautiful women in bed,

ਨਟ ਨਾਟਿਕ ਆਖਾਰੇ ਗਾਇਆ ॥
ਮੈਂ ਰੰਗ-ਭੂਮੀ ਵਿਚ ਨਟਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਟਕ ਵੇਖੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਏ ਹੋਏ ਸੁਣੇ ਹਨ ।

ਤਾ ਮਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਰੁੱਝ ਕੇ ਭੀ (ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਨੇ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ ।੨।
– but even with them, the mind does not find contentment. ||2||

ਤਖਤੁ ਸਭਾ ਮੰਡਨ ਦੋਲੀਚੇ ॥
ਰਾਜ-ਦਰਬਾਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਜਾਵਟਾਂ, ਤਖ਼ਤ (ਉਤੇ ਬੈਠਣਾ), ਦੁਲੀਚੇ,
You may have a throne at the royal court, with beautiful decorations and soft carpets,

ਸਗਲ ਮੇਵੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਬਾਗੀਚੇ ॥
ਸਭ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਫਲ, ਸੁੰਦਰ ਫੁਲਵਾੜੀਆਂ,
all sorts of luscious fruits and beautiful gardens,

ਆਖੇੜ ਬਿਰਤਿ ਰਾਜਨ ਕੀ ਲੀਲਾ ॥
ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ਖੇਡਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਰੁਚੀ, ਰਾਜਿਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਖੇਡਾਂ—
the excitement of the chase and princely pleasures

ਮਨੁ ਨ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ਪਰਪੰਚੁ ਹੀਲਾ ॥੩॥
(ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਭੀ) ਮਨ ਸੁਖੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ । ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਤਨ ਛਲ ਹੀ ਸਾਬਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
– but still, the mind is not made happy by such illusory diversions. ||3||

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸੰਤਨ ਸਚੁ ਕਹਿਆ ॥
(ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ-ਤਮਾਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਸੁਖ ਭਾਲਦੇ ਨੂੰ) ਸੰਤਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸੱਚ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ
In their kindness, the Saints have told me of the True One,

ਸਰਬ ਸੂਖ ਇਹੁ ਆਨੰਦੁ ਲਹਿਆ ॥
ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੂਲ ਇਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ
and so I have obtained all comforts and joy.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਗਾਈਐ ॥
ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਣੇ ਚਾਹੀਦੇ ਹਨ
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, I sing the Kirtan of the Lord’s Praises.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੪॥
ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! ਆਖ—ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਇਹ ਦਾਤਿ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ।੪।
Says Nanak, through great good fortune, I have found this. ||4||

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਸੋਈ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ॥
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਸੌਖਾ ਹੈ ।
One who obtains the wealth of the Lord becomes happy.

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਮੇਲਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੧੨॥੮੧॥
ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਬੈਠਣਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਨਸੀਬ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧। ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ।
By God’s Grace, I have joined the Saadh Sangat. ||1||Second Pause||12||81||
