SGGS Angg 793.

Raag Suhi – Bhagat Kabir Ji.

Bhagat Ji uses language of land surveyors and land transactions/taxes in India to describe the challenges he had to face on the spiritual path.

In the one fortress of the body, there are five overlords (kaam, krodh, lobh, moh, ahankar), and all five demand payment of taxes; I have not farmed any of their lands, I am not happy to make any such payment. (Such payment is an unfair burden upon me).

“Ek kote panch sikdara pachay maange haala; jimmi nahi mai kissi ko boyee aisa dehn dukhala.”

O people of the Lord, the tax collector (mann) is constantly torturing me; raising my arms upwards, I called out to my Guru, and He saved me.

“Har ke lagha mo ko neet dasse patwari; upar bhuja kar mai Gur peh pukariya tin hao liya ubari.” (rahao).

There are nine tax assessors (nine apertures), and ten magistrates, 5 gyan indre, 5 karam indre), and they do not allow their subjects to live in peace; they do not measure accurately, and they take huge amounts as bribes.

“Nao dadee das mounsaf dhaave reiyat bassan na dehi; dori puri mappe nahi baho bistala lehi.”

The One Lord, contained in the seventy two chambers of the body, He has written His Naam on me (i.e. purified me); as the records of Dharam Rai are examined, there are no accounts owed by me.

“Bahatar ghar Ek Purakh samaeiya unn diya Naam likhayee; Dharam Rai ka daftar sodhiya baki rijam na kayee.”

Let no one slander the Saints as they and the Lord are as One; Kabir says, I have met that Guru who has Clear Understanding.

“Santa ko matt koyee nindho Sant Raam hai Eko; kaho Kabir mai so Gur paaya ja ka Naao bibeko.”
