Raag Assa (Asa) M.5
The Lord has Infinite gunn. (Virtues). In Mool Mantar, Guru Nanak Dev Ji tells us of 9 gunn of God.
In this Shabad, amongst other things, Guru Ji tells us of the highest gunn of God which we should drench ourselves with. That God is near at hand. Once we imbibe this gunn within ourselves, we would be cautious against breaching His Hukam, since we know He is near and present and watching our every act.
Guru Ji starts this Shabad with advice to the jeev isteri. Become the servant of the Saints (Guru) and adopt this way of life; of all Virtues, the highest Virtue is to see your Husband Lord near at hand.
“Santa ki hoye daasri eh achara sikh ri; saggal gunna gunn utmo Bharta durr na pikh ri.”
Dye your beautiful mind with the color of God’s Love; renounce all cleverness and cunning and know that the Sustainer of the world is with you.
“Eh mandar sundar apnaa Har Naam majithey rang ri; tyaag sianap chaturi tu jaan Gopaleh sang ri.” (rahao).
Whatever your Husband Lord says (Bani), accept that and decorate yourself with It; forget the love of maya, this is the delicacy you should relish.
“Bharta kahe so maniye eh shingaar banaiye ri; dujja bhao visariye eh tambola khaye ri.”
Make the Guru’s Shabad your guiding Lamp, and let Truth be your bed; twenty four hours a day stand with your palms pressed together, (i.e. live in utter humility), and pray the Lord King shall meet you.
“Gur ka Shabad kar deepko eh Sat ki sej bishaiye ri; aath pahar kar jorh raho tao bhetay Har Rai ri.”
She alone is cultured, has all the graces, and is of incomparable beauty; Nanak says , such a bride who is pleasing to the Creator Lord, she alone is a happy soul bride.
“Tis hi chajj shingar sabh sayee roop apaar ri; sayee Suhagan Nanaka jo bhani Kartar ri.”
