Raag Gauree

This Shabad has the heading “Gauri bhi Sorath bhi,” i.e. this Shabad should be sung in a mixture of both raags.

The Shabad tells us it is shameful for us to leave the Sharan of our Guru/God and to seek relief from others (devi devas, sianays, tantrics, babas, bomohs, taggey taveets, feng shui, astrologers and the like).

Bhagat Kabir Ji addresses one such person (who has strayed).

O shameless being, do you not feel any shame?; having forsaken the Lord, where will you go now?

“Re jee nilajj lajj tohe nahi; Har tajj katt kahu ke jahee.” (rahao).

One whose Master is the most Highest and Most Exalted; it is not proper for him to go to the house of another.

“Ja ko Thakur uchaa hoyee; so jann par ghar jaat na sohee.”

That Lord is pervading and permeating everywhere; he is always with you and never far away (so why look for Him elsewhere?).

“So Sahib rehiya bharpoor; sada sangee nahi Har duur.”

(Even) maya takes the Sanctuary of His Lotus Feet; tell me what is it that He cannot provide?

“Kavla Charan Sharan hai ja ke; kaho jann ka nahi ghar ta ke.”

Everyone speaks of Him being All Powerful; He is All Capable and the Great Giver.

“Sabh kouu kahe jaas ki bataa; so Samrath nijh pat hai Dataa.”

Says Kabir, he alone is Perfect in this world; in whose heart there is place for no other (besides the Lord).

“Kahe Kabir puran jag soyee; ja ke hirday avar na hoyee.”
