Raag Gauree – M5 (Sukhmani Sahib)

Gurbani emphasises again and again that He is the Doer – the One “Karan Karavanhar Suami.”

In Sukhmani Sahib Guru Ji says we should always remember the One All Pervading Lord. Reflect upon yourself. What your Divine Origin (mool) was, and the sorry state you are in now.

“Rameiya ke Gunn chet praani; kavan mool te kavan dhristani.”

He was the One who created you, fashioned you and adorned you; even in the fire of the mother’s womb He protected you.

“Jin tu saaj sawaar shingariya; garap aggan me jinhe ubariya.”

In your infancy He gave you milk; in the fullness of youth He gave you food, joys and understanding.

“Bal bivastha tujhe piare dudh; bhar joban bhojan sukh sood.”

As you grow old, family and friends feed you as you sit and rest (not all however, are fortunate to have this).

The worthless one does not realise that all this pampering in reality, was done by God (not by the relatives and friends); if he is forgiven, then some understanding will seep into him.

“Eh nirgun Gunn kichu na bujhe; baksh leho tao Nanak sijhe”

Man is generally selfish and easily forgets favors and love showered upon him. Guru Ji says the love you see in the world is false (temporary). Whether it is the spouse or friends, all are pursuing their own interests.

“Jagat me jhuthi dekhi preet; apne hi sukh seyo sabh laage kya dara kya meet.” (Ang 536)

Again, at Angg 634, Guru Ji reminds, all are here for their personal benefit and no one truly belongs to another.

“Pritam jaan leho mann mahi; apne sukh seyo hi jagh fandhiyo ko kahu ko nahi.”

In this clip (available on YouTube), this adorable grandmother saw the infidelity of all relationships. She has mostly recovered well from the traumatic neglect by her children and grandchildren. Gurbani says, He is the Doer. She, and all of us have to accept His Will and move on in life.
