Raag Basant M.5

This Shabad contains Divine Advice from the Guru to all Sikhs.

As you chant His Name, your mouth gets purified; meditating upon Him, your reputation becomes spotless; as you adore and worship Him, you are not tortured by the messenger of death (by any miseries); serving Him, you obtain everything.

“Jis bolatt mukh pavitt hoye; jis simrat nirmal hai soye; jis aradhay jamm kich na kahey; jis ki sewa sabh kich lahey.”

Recite, do recite the Name of the All Pervading Lord; abandon all other desires of the mind.

The word used is “kaam.” Depending on the context, kaam can mean lust. Kaam can also mean desires as is the sense in which it is used in this Shabad. The full word is “kaamniya” i.e. desires or wishes. The translation on the net is correct.

“Raam Raam bolh Raam Raam; tyago mann ke saggal kaam.” (rahao).

He is the Support of the earth and sky; His Light illuminates every heart; meditating upon Him, sinners get purified; when their end comes (such purified ones) will not weep over and over again.

“Jis ke dhare dharan akaas; ghat ghat jis ka hai pargaas; jis simrat patit puneet hoye; antt kaal firr firr na roye.”

Amongst all religious practices this (to recite Raam Raam) is the supreme practice; amongst all rituals and disciplines this is above all; the angels, mortals and demi gods yearn for Him; to find Him, commit yourself to the service of the Saints (Guru, Sadhsanggat).

“Sarab dharam me uttam dharam; karam kartoot ke upar karam; jis ko chahe sur nar dev; Sant sabha ki lagho sev.”

One whom the Primal Lord blesses with His Gift; he obtains the Treasure of the Lord (Naam); His State and Extent cannot be described; servant Nanak repeatedly meditates upon Him.

“Aad Purakh jis kiya daan; tis ko miliya Har Nidhaan; tis ki gatt mitt kahi na jaaye; Nanak jann Har Har dhiaaiye.”
