An anaath, an orphan talks in utter humility to God. In Gurbani the word anaath is often used. Apart from meaning an orphan, it refers to a Sikh with a high avastha, i.e. the Sikh has risen above (detached from) all worldly relationships. He now considers himself all alone, as an orphan.
O Dear God, I am a wretched, helpless orphan; from which Divine Source did you create the mortal in me?. That is Truly Your Glorious Greatness.
“Prabh ji mohe kavan anaath bichaara; kavan mool te manukh kariya eh partaap Tuhaara.” (rahao).
You are the Giver of the soul, and breath of life to all. Your Infinite Greatness is beyond words; You are the Beloved Lord of all, You cherish all, and provide Support for all.
“Jee pran sarab ke Datey gunn kahe na jahe apaara; sabh ko Pritam sarab Pritpalak sarab ghataan adhaara.”
No one knows Your extent and expanse. You alone created the vast Universe; Nanak says, please give a seat in the Boat (Naam) of the Saints (Guru), so that I may cross the world ocean.
“Koye na jaane Tumri gatt mitt Aape Ek pasaara; Sadh Nav bethavho Nanak bhav saagar paar utaara.”
Bhai Ji further elaborated on November 22, 2024:
One fascinating aspect of Gurbani is the Infinite shades of each Shabad. Each Shabad is always fresh and new with a refreshing aspect of God.
In this Shabad, a Sikh says, O Master (Prabh Ji) I am a helpless, wretched, orphan. (anath bichara).
Who can say (kavan) about Your Glory (Partap), that You chose to create mortals (manukh kariya) from some Mysterious Source (mool).
You are the Creator of the soul (jiaa), our breaths (pran), Benefactor to all (sarab ke Datey). None can ever describe Your Infinite Glories (Gunn kahe na jahe Apaara).
You are the Beloved Lord ( Pritam) of all ( sabh ko), Cherisher of all ( sarab Pritpalak), and the Support ( Adhara) of all hearts ( sarab ghata).
No one knows Your State and Extent (koye na jaane Teri Gatt Mitt). You Alone created the Entire Expanse (Aape Ek Pasaara).
Please seat me on the boat
(Sadh naav bethavho) of the Saints (Shabad).
Nanak says, that is the only means by which I can cross the terrifying world ocean and reach the other shore. (bhav saagar paar utaara).
