SGGS Angg 558.

Raag Wadhans (Vadhans) M.3

The mind is very perplexing. It can, with the Guru’s Grace, rise to Supreme Heights, and Unite with God in the Daswa Dwar.

(“Aggam Roop ka mann me Thaana” – Ang 186).

If left unchecked, it goes on frolics of it’s own and binds the jeev in inextricable bondages. It can descend to base, vulgar levels, devoid of all shame.

The Gurus repeatedly remind the mann, that it’s origin is Divine, (“mann tu Jote Saroop hai apna mool pechaan”- Angg 440), and it should recognize it’s origins, and Unite with the Lord.

In this Shabad, Guru Amardas Ji tells us very important aspects of the mann. Guru Ji also stresses that besides the Sharan of the Satguru, the mann cannot be subdued by any method.

The mann is inside our body. Thus, external washing of the body does not remove the filth of the mann. And, if the mann is dirty, everything else gets dirtied too.

“Mann mailey sabh kich maila tann dhotey mann hacha na hoye.”

This world is deluded by all kinds of illusions and deceptions, how rare are those who understand this.

“Eh jagat bharam bhulaeya virla bujhay koye.”

A Sikh should daily instruct his mind this – O my mind, chant the One Name (i.e. the Infinite Names, (Attributes) of the One Lord); the True Guru has given me this Treasure (Naam).

“Jap mann mere Eko Naam; Satgur diya mo kl eh Nidhaan.” (rahao).

Even if one learns the yogic postures of the Siddhas and holds his lustful energies in check; still, the filth of the mind is not removed, and the filth of egotism is not eliminated.

“Siddha ke assan je sikhay eindri vass kar kamaaye; mann ki mail na utray haumai mail na jaaye.”

This mind cannot be controlled by any other discipline or method, besides the Sanctuary of the True Guru; meeting (uniting) with the True Guru (Shabad), the mind is inverted from it’s focus on maya (and focuses on God), and one is transformed beyond description.

“Eis mann ko hor sanjam ko nahi vinn Satgur ki sarnaaiye; Satgur miliye ultee bhayee kehna kichu na jaaye.”

Nanak prays, one who dies upon meeting the True Guru shall be eternally rejuvenated through the Guru’s Shabad; the filth of his attachments (to maya) shall be removed and the mind purified.

“Bhannat Nanak Satgur ko mildo marey Gur ke Shabad firr jive koye; mamta ki malh utrey eh mann hasha hoye.”
