Raag Majh
Bara Maha Majh M.5. Angg 135.
Kartrik or Kattak is the 8th month of the Indian Calendar.
It runs from mid October to mid November.
Certain days of the month, especially the tail end are considered inauspicious. It is believed that persons born during that period are frail and unhealthy. The sun is supposed to be far away from the earth, thus enough energy from the sun does not reach them.
To appease the sun, fasts are kept. Some become vegetarians for the whole month
This Surya dosh is further complicated by pitar (ancestor) dosh, sutak (new born uncleanness in house), dosh.
It is recommended that one should do puja of Krishna or Vishnu to counter effects of kartrik dosha.
In the month of Kattak, one should not cut one’s nails, nor shave, nor go bald.
Any argument in Katrik will have bad consequences for you. Many decide to keep maun (vow of silence) during Kartrik so they do not enter into arguments.
In contrast to all the dosh put on the sun and others, Guru Nanak Dev Ji has made it clear in Patti Likhi that the dosh is due to our karmas, not the moon and stars.
“Dadda dosh na diye kisse dosh karma apnea; jo mai kiya so mai paaya dosh na dijje avar janna.” (Ang 432).
Thus in relation to the month of Kattak, in Bara Maha, Guru Ji says all the various rituals you do (kattak karam kamavhne), do not place blame on others. (dosh na kahu jogh).
Your troubles are because you have forgotten God. (Instead of Almighty God, who is Nirankar, you attach yourself to akaar idols of Krishna and Vishnu)
“Parmeshwar te bhullian viaapen sabhe rogh.”
As you turned your face away from God (Naam), and took to rituals, idols and other practices, you turned your back (bemukh) to God. This has resulted in being consigned to repeated reincarnation.
“Bemukh hoye Raam te Laggan janam vijogh”
As your troubles increase, all worldly pleasures turn bitter in an instant.
“Khin me kaudhe hoye gaye jitne maya bhog.”
No one can save you and intervene on your behalf, on whose shoulders can you now weep?
“Vich na koyi kar sakke kis thay rovay rojh.”
Your own efforts amount to nothing. It was so written from the Primal Source, that you had to undergo such suffering.
“Kitta kichu na hovayi likhiya Dhur Sanjogh.”
If by great fortune, I meet my Lord, all my anguish will vanish
“Vadhbhagi mera Prabh milhe ta utray sabh biyogh.”
Do Ardas to your Guru to be saved; ” Please save Nanak. You, Lord are the One who gives freedom from bondage.”
“Nanak ko Prabh leho mere Sahib Bandhi Moch.”
Finally, Guru Ji says, instead of following the Brahmin priests and pandits, one should rush to Sadhsang, and all anxieties will vanish.
“Kattak hovay Sadhsang binse sabhe soch.”
