Before we can hope for merger with the Divine, it is necessary to cleanse yourself. The passions reside within us and it is an inner cleansing. Any outer cleansing is a waste of time. Only Naam can reach deep inside to eradicate karmas etched within you.
Japji Sahib says
“Suniya maniya man kita bhaoo;
Antargat tirath mal naoo”
(Listen and believe in Naam in humility and love: cleanse yourself internally at the Sacred Shrine within).
In this Shabad, a Sikh prays to the Guru. Lust, anger,greed, falsehood and slander – please save me from these.
“Kaam krodh lobh jhuth ninda ein te aap chadavho”
Please eradicate these from within me and call me to be close to You.
“Eh bhittar te ein ko darho appan nikat bulavho”
Your Ways are known to You alone.
“Apni bidh aap janavho”
With the Lord’s other humble servants I sing His Praises.
“Har jan mangal gavho” (rahao)
May I never forget the Lord: please instill this understanding within my mind.
“Bissar nahi kabhu hiye te eh bidh man me pavho”
By great good fortune Nanak has met the Perfect Guru (Shabad), and will never wander away again.
“Gur Pura bhetiyo vadbhagi jan Nanak kathe na dhavho”
