SGGS Angg 749-750

Raag Suhi M.5.

Guru Ji speaks about the Saints. In contrast, in one line, Guru Ji tells us about those who are so intoxicated in maya it never crosses their minds, that they will have to die one day (and render accounts).

Master, when You Stand (Protectively) over their heads how can they suffer any pain?

“Jis ke sirr upar Tu Suami so dukh kaisa paavhe.”

(In contrast, the manmukh) intoxicated with maya, has no regard for Your Name, and the thought of death does not ever cross his mind.

“Bolh na jaane maya madh maata marna cheet na aave.”

Gurbani tells us we must remember death will come upon us. Such thoughts will keep us in check, and push us towards Naam. Those who ignore death are criticised.

Angg 457.

“Malh bharam karam ahung mamta marna cheet na aave.”
(caught in the filth of doubts, evil actions and possessiveness, they do not remember death).

Angg 705.

“Lobh moh abhimaan budhey maran cheet na aave.”
(drowning in greed, attachments and pride, they fail to remember death).

In the rahao, Guru Ji says, O Sovereign Lord, You belong to the Saints and the Saints belong to You; Your servant has no fears and the messenger of death and miseries cannot come even near him.

“Mere Ram Rai Tu Santa ka Sant Tere; Tere sewak ko bhao kich nahi jamm nahi aave nerey.” (rahao).

Those who are drenched with Your Love, are released from the pains of births and deaths; no one can erase Your Blessings, that is the assurance of my Satguru.”

Jo Tere rang ratey Suami tin ka janam maran dukh nasaa; Teri baksh na metay koyee Satgur ka dilasaa.”

Those who mediate upon Your Naam, and adore You twenty four hours a day, obtain the fruits of Peace; in Your Sanctuary, with Your Support, they subdue the five villains.

“Naam dhiaiyen sukh falh paiyen aath pahar aradhey; Teri Sharan Tere bharvasey panch dusht le sadhey.”

In the final lines, the Sikh says, I lay no claim to wisdom, meditation and good deeds, and I do not know Your Excellences;  (but this I know), Satgur Nanak is the Greatest of all, and He has preserved my honour (strength), in these times.

“Gyan dhyan kich karam na jaana sar n jana Teri; sabh te vadda Satgur Nanak jin kal rakhi meri.”

————————————————————————————————Bhai Ji added on November 5, 2024:

Ordinary mortals get so intoxicated with maya, that they are deaf to all wisdom of the Scriptures. Neither do they ever remember death must come one day and accounts will have to be rendered.

“Bolh na jaane maya madh maata marna cheet na aavhe.”

In contrast, the Saintly ones have His Protective Hands over their heads and they suffer no pain.

“Jis ke sirr upar Tu Suami so dukh kaisa paavhe.”

The rest of the Shabad speaks of His Blessings upon His Saints.
