Raag Assa – Bhagat Ravidas Ji.
The word “har” has many meanings. Some Dictionaries list as many as 50 different meanings. It can mean frog, snake, deer, greenery and so on.
In Gurbani however, the word “Har” is used for the All Pervading Lord and has several meanings in relation to His Infinite Gunn, His Attributes.
Har means to extract or remove. So, Har refers to God who removes your karmic lekha and burdens i.e. “har lehnda”.
Har also refers to God who is hareiya bhareiya i.e. forever fresh and in blossom, and who, in His Grace, can make you hareiya bhareiya.
Har also means God who is everywhere, at all times, in all situations i.e. “har thaan, har samaa, har gall vich”.
In Gurbani, these are the three main attributes of God when the word “Har” is used. As the attributes of Har are Infinite, there will be other attributes too, depending on the context.
Here, Bhagat Ji, in the first line, says Har six times, and Harey the seventh time.
(The repetition stresses the need to recite the Lord’s Name as many times as possible. The next line refers to simran); meditating upon Har, (God), the humble ones are carried forward to salvation).
“Har Har Har Har Har Har Harey; Har simrat jann gaye nistar terey.” (Rahao).
It was due to the Lord’s Name, that Kabir became famous and respected; all the accounts of His past lives were torn up.
“Har ke Naam Kabir ujagar; janam janam ke katey kaagar.”
With love, Namdeo offered milk to the Lord to drink; and He did not have to suffer the torments of reincarnation in this world again.
“Nimat Namdeo dudh piaeyaa; tao jag janam sankatt nahi aaya.”
Servant Ravidas is imbued with love for God; thus, with Guru’s Grace, He will not be consigned to hell ever.
“Jann Ravidas Raam rang rataa; eio Gur Parsad narak nahi jataa.”
