Raag Bhairo – Bhagat Kabeer (Kabir) Jio.

Bhagat Kabir Ji advises a Mulla and a Kazi. They asserted that God was in the seventh heaven and operated everything from there.

Bhagat Ji tells the Mulla, you are not even a Mulla. A true Mulla is one who grapples with his mind and subdues it through the Guru’s Teachings and conquers death.

“So Mulla jo man seyo larey; Gur updesh kaal seyo jurey.”

A Mulla who crushes the pride of the messenger of death; such a Mulla will always have my respect.

“Kaal purakh ka mardey maan; tis Mulla ko sada salaam.”

In the rahao Bhagat Ji says God is ever present, why say He is far away?; tie up your argumentative passions and you will find the Beauteous Lord.

“Hai hajoor kat duur batavho; dundar (can also mean ugly, quarrelsome, loud, hideous) bandho Sundar pavho” (rahao)

Addressing the Kazi next, Bhagat Ji says a true Kazi is one who reflects within his own body; and understands that the body warmth is kept ignited by the Lord.

“Kazi so jo kaaiya bicharey; kaaiya ki aggan Brahm parjarey.”

A Kazi who does not lose his semen even in his dreams (who keeps his lust under control), for such a Kazi there is no old age or death.

“Supnay bind na deyi jharna; tis Kazi ko jara na marnaa.”

Bhagat next speaks about the rulers. He is a good sultan who shoots arrows at two (that translation is literal. Doye is reference to maya, duality); and restrains his mind from straying outwards. He assembles his armies in the mind’s sky (daswa dwar), such a sultan is worthy of a royal canopy over his head.

“So surtan jo doye sar taaney; bahar jataa bhitar aaney; gagan mandal me laskar karey; so surtan chattar sirr dharey.”

In the final pada Bhagat Ji makes a very important observation. The jogi cries out “Gorakh, Gorakh (a reference to Gorakhnath a famous jogi nath); a Hindu recites the name of Ram (reference to Ramchandar son of Dasrath); the Muslim prays to One Khuda (which is what we Sikhs do too. But there is a difference as Bhagat Ji explains in the last line); Kabir prays to the All Pervading Lord (Who is everywhere, not just in the seventh heaven).

“Jogi Gorakh Gorakh kahey; Hindu Ram naam uchrey; Musalman ka Ek Khudai  Kabir ka Suami rehiya samaaiye.”
