Raag Assa (Asa) Bhagat Kabir Ji

Kabir Ji has a deep look at pakhandi babas and sadhus. They make outward shows of piety, but inwardly they are prepared to gobble you in their greed.

Firstly Bhagat Ji looks at their outward appearance.

They wear three and a half yard long loin cloths and triple wound sacred threads (janehu); They wear rosaries around their necks and carry glittering water jugs in their hands.

“Gajj sadey teh teh dhotiyan tehre paiyen tagg; galli jinna japmaliya lotey hath nibagg”

Bhagat Ji concludes. Such persons (despite their outward show of piousness) are not saints but are thugs of Benares.

“Oye Har ke sant na aakhiye Benares ke thug”.

Bhagat Ji says such persons are not pleasing to Him. They swallow trees whole together with their branches (they will cheat you out of everything you have).

“Aisey sant na mo ko bhave; dalaa sio bheda gatkavhe” (Rahao).

A further look at their attempts to achieve purity. They wash their pots and pans before putting them on the stove and they wash the firewood too before lighting it. They dig the earth to make two fireplaces (one for food and one for dhall), but in reality they eat entire human beings.

“Bassan maanj charavhe upar kathi dhoye jalavhe; basuda khod kare doye chulay sarey manas khaave ”

Such sinners always wander about doing evil deeds and call themselves touch nothing saints (i.e. they do not touch maya with their hands); they wander about forever in self conceit and drown their entire families too.

“Oye paapi sada firey apradhi mukho aparas kahave; sada sada firey abhimani sagley kotumb dubavhe”

Such persons attach themselves to behaviour as the Lord attaches them (i.e. He leads them to their destruction) and they act accordingly; Kabir says one who meets the Satguru (Shabad) is not reincarnated again.

“Jit ko laaya tit hi lagaa taisey karam kamavhe; kaho Kabir jis Satgur bhetay punrap janam na aave”
