Guru Arjan Dev Ji in Raag Bilaaval  – Raag Bilawal M.5

Guru Ji observes a Sikh. He sees the agonies the Sikh is going through, traces the source of his miseries, and gives Divine Advice to him.

Besides the Name of the Lord nothing can be of any use; you are so engrossed with the Enticer maya.

“Bin Har kaam na aavat he; ja seyo rach mach tum laage oh mohni mohavat he.” (rahao).

You shall have to leave behind your gold, woman, and your comfortable bed and depart in an instant; you are entangled in lustful pleasures, and eating poisonous drugs which make you lose consciousness (of Reality).

“Kanak kamnee sej sohnee chodh khinne me jaavat he; urj rehiyo eindree rass prareyo bikhay thagauree khaavat he.”

You have built and decorated a palace of straw, and you have lit a fire underneath; you sit puffed up in what you think is your fortress, you stubborn minded fool. What can you gain out of it?

“Trin ko mandar saaj savariyo paavak talle jaravat he; aisey garh me aith hathilo fulh fulh kya paavat he.”

The five thieves stand over your head, seizing you by the hair, they drive you on; but you do not see them, you blind and ignorant fool; intoxicated with ego, you sleep on unaware.

“Panch doot mudh par thade kes gahe feravat he; dhrist na aave andh agyanee soye rehiyo madh maavat he.”

The net (of maya) has been spread out, the bait scattered, and like a bird, you are being trapped; Nanak says, to cut off the bonds I meditate upon the True Guru (Shabad).

“Jaal pasaar chog bistharee pankhi jio fahavat he; kaho Nanak bandhan kaatan ko mai Satgur Purakh dhiaavat he.”

ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
Bilaaval, Fifth Mehla:

ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਵਤ ਹੇ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਚੀਜ਼ ਤੇਰੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ) ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕਦੀ ।
Without the Lord, nothing is of any use.

ਜਾ ਸਿਉ ਰਾਚਿ ਮਾਚਿ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ ਲਾਗੇ ਓਹ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਮੋਹਾਵਤ ਹੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜਿਸ ਮਨ-ਮੋਹਣੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਲ ਤੂੰ ਰਚਿਆ ਮਿਚਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਉਹ ਤਾਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਠੱਗ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
You are totally attached to that Enticer Maya; she is enticing you. ||1||Pause||

ਕਨਿਕ ਕਾਮਿਨੀ ਸੇਜ ਸੋਹਨੀ ਛੋਡਿ ਖਿਨੈ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਵਤ ਹੇ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸੋਨਾ (ਧਨ-ਪਦਾਰਥ), ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਸੇਜ—ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਇਕ ਛਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਥੋਂ ਤੁਰ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
You shall have to leave behind your gold, your woman and your beautiful bed; you shall have to depart in an instant.

ਉਰਝਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਰਸ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਿਓ ਬਿਖੈ ਠਗਉਰੀ ਖਾਵਤ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
ਕਾਮ-ਵਾਸਨਾ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦਾਂ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਤੂੰ ਕਾਮ-ਵਾਸਨਾ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈਂ, ਅਤੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ-ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਠਗ-ਬੂਟੀ ਖਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ (ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਤੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਹੋਸ਼ ਪਿਆ ਹੈਂ) ।੧।
You are entangled in the lures of sexual pleasures, and you are eating poisonous drugs. ||1||

ਤ੍ਰਿਣ ਕੋ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਸਾਜਿ ਸਵਾਰਿਓ ਪਾਵਕੁ ਤਲੈ ਜਰਾਵਤ ਹੇ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਤੀਲਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਘਰ ਬਣਾ ਸਵਾਰ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੇਠ ਅੱਗ ਬਾਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ (ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਭਾਂਬੜ ਮਚਾ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਆਹ ਕਰੀ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ।
You have built and adorned a palace of straw, and under it, you light a fire.

ਐਸੇ ਗੜ ਮਹਿ ਐਠਿ ਹਠੀਲੋ ਫੂਲਿ ਫੂਲਿ ਕਿਆ ਪਾਵਤ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
(ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸੜ ਰਹੇ) ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ-ਕਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਵਿਚ ਆਕੜ ਕੇ ਹਠੀ ਹੋਇਆ ਬੈਠਾ ਤੂੰ ਮਾਣ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਹਾਸਲ ਤਾਂ ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ।੨।
Sitting all puffed-up in such a castle, you stubborn-minded fool, what do you think you will gain? ||2||

ਪੰਚ ਦੂਤ ਮੂਡ ਪਰਿ ਠਾਢੇ ਕੇਸ ਗਹੇ ਫੇਰਾਵਤ ਹੇ ॥
ਹੇ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ! ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਪੰਜੇ ਵੈਰੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਖਲੋਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਜ਼ਲੀਲ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਦਿੱਸਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ,
The five thieves stand over your head and seize you. Grabbing you by your hair, they will drive you on.

ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਨ ਆਵਹਿ ਅੰਧ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਸੋਇ ਰਹਿਓ ਮਦ ਮਾਵਤ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
ਤੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਸ਼ੇ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਹੋਇਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈਂ ।੩।
You do not see them, you blind and ignorant fool; intoxicated with ego, you just keep sleeping. ||3||

ਜਾਲੁ ਪਸਾਰਿ ਚੋਗ ਬਿਸਥਾਰੀ ਪੰਖੀ ਜਿਉ ਫਾਹਾਵਤ ਹੇ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਪੰਛੀ ਨੂੰ ਫੜਨ ਲਈ ਜਾਲ ਖਿਲਾਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਉਤੇ ਚੋਗ ਖਿਲਾਰੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਤੂੰ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਚੋਗ ਵਿਚ) ਫਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ।
The net has been spread out, and the bait has been scattered; like a bird, you are being trapped.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬੰਧਨ ਕਾਟਨ ਕਉ ਮੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਧਿਆਵਤ ਹੇ ॥੪॥੨॥੮੮॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਖ—(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੱਟਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਹਾ ਪੁਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ ।੪।੨।੮੮।
Says Nanak, my bonds have been broken; I meditate on the True Guru, the Primal Being. ||4||2||88||
