Raag Gauree (Gauri) M.5

When a King returns victorious from a battle, it is common for the bards to sing his praises. Such praises are delivered in heroic metre. In Indian poetry, such heroic metre is called Radd. An example of Radd Shantt is found at Angg 1399 in the Swaiyyas of Bhatt Nall Ji.

This Shabad is couched like a Radd. (Lectures – Bhai Maan Singh Chaur).

The Shabad speaks in glowing terms of the Mightiest King of all, God Himself.

A Sikh pleads to Almighty God to save him.

The Sikh says O Brave and Powerful God with Strong Arms, I have fallen into a pit (of ignorance and misery), – please hold my hand.

“Bhuj Bal Bir Brahm Sukh Sagar garat parat geh leyo angouriya.” (rahao).

My ears are hard of hearing, my eyes have lost their lustre, I am in such pain, a poor cripple crying at Your Door.

“Sarvan neh surat nainn sundar nahi aarat dwar ratatt pingouriya.”

O Master of the weak and helpless orphans, Embodiment of Compassion, You are my Trusty Friend, my Father and Mother.

“Deena Nath anath Karuna Me Saajan Meet Pita Mehtariya.”

Nanak holds tight to the Lord’s Lotus Feet (Bani), in his heart. The Saints (Guru) carries me across the terrifying world ocean.

“Charan Kaval hirday geh Nanak bhey sagar Sant paar uteriya.”
