This Shantt has 4 padas. This is the 1st pada of this Shant. Guru Ji describes the blessed inner avastha of the Saints. Their external surroundings too become electrified and most pleasant with the aura of Naam in the Saints.
The night is wet with dew, and the stars twinkle in the heavens; the Saints remain wakeful in the love of their All Pervading Lord.
“Bhinni rainnerhiye chamkan tarey; jaage Sant janna mere Raam pyare.”
These Beloveds of the Lord remain ever wakeful, and meditate upon the Name, day and night; their hearts are focused on the Lotus Feet (Bani) of the Lord, and they do not forget Him, even for an instant.
“Raam pyare sada jaage Naam simre andinno; Charan Kamal dhyaan hirday Prabh bissar nahi eik khinno.”
They have renounced their pride, emotional attachments, evil of their minds, and burnt away the pains of wickedness; prays Nanak, the humble Saints of the Lord remain ever wakeful.
“Tajj maan moh bikaar mann ka kalmalaa dukh jaare; binvant Nanak sada jaage Har daas Sant pyare.”
Bhai Ji further elaborated on December 4, 2025:
Bhai Soma was a petty businessman from Jhelum.
He came to Amritsar, and had darshan of Guru Ramdas Ji.
Guru Ji asked Bhai Soma, “ajj kee khatee kiti hai?” (What have you earned today?).
Bhai Soma Ji placed his days earnings and metha tek to Guru Ji. This went on for five days, and each time Bhai Soma Ji would metha tek his daily meagre earnings before Guru Ramdas Ji.
On the sixth day, Guru Ji saw him doing some sewa. Bhai Soma rushed towards the Guru, intending to metha tek his earnings as usual.
This time, Guru Ji said “Bhai Soma Ji ajj Assi kuch dena hai.” Guru Ji said from today you will be known as Soma Shah. Shah means rich businessman.
Within days, Bhai Soma’s earnings increased with great speed, and he was soon a rich man.
His son, Ram Shah was very wealthy too and contributed greatly to Guru Ji’s langgar during the times of Guru Arjun Dev Ji and other Guru Sahibs.
Bhai Mehar Shah took Khande da Pahul during the time of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Guru Ji allowed him to keep the name Shah and he was named Mehar Shah Singh.
It is from that lineage Bhai Vishan Shah Singh was born in 1927. The family was wealthy as always. Bhai Vishan Shah Singh however, took to Kirtan with a passion.
He passed on in 2000.
His son Harmeet Shah Singh is of course wealthy and a renowned Editor of the India Today Group.
All it needed was a single word from the Guru and it bestowed wealth to generations. Gurbani says,
” Gur ka Bachan Atal Achedh” (Ang 177)
(The Guru’s Word is Infallible, Everlasting, and cannot ever be destroyed).
