Raag Sri Raag M.1.

The 2nd Shabad by Guru Nanak Dev Ji in Sri Raag chaupadey.

Guru Ji speaks to God in admiration and wonder. Again and again Guru Ji stresses that no one can place a value of the Glory of His Naam (His Infinite Attributes).

The Shabad starts with some fantastic possibilities. And this fantastic scene is maintained in every pada.

If I were to live for millions of years and the air was my food and drink; if I lived in a cave and never saw either the sun or the moon and if I never slept, even in my dreams. Even so, I could never estimate Your Value; how can I ever describe the Greatness of Your Name?

“Kot kot meri aarja pavan piyen apiaao; chand suraj doye gufey na dekha supney saun na thaoo; bhi Teri keemat na pavhe hao kevadh aakha Naao” (this final line is repeated 4 times in this Shabad, stressing Guru Ji’s awe at the Infinite and Majestic Nature of Naam).

In the rahao, Guru Ji says the Lord is Formless and dwells in His Own Place/Dimension/Plane (Sachkhand); I have heard over and over again, and I speak as I heard. If it pleases You Lord, shower Your Love upon me.

“Sacha Nirankar nijh thaeey; sunn sunn aakhan aakhna je bhave kare tamaaye” (rahao).

If I were slashed and cut again and again, put into the mill and ground into flour; burnt by fire and mixed into the ashes; even so, I could never estimate Your Value. How can I ever describe the Greatness of Your Name?

“Kussa katiyan vaar vaar pissan pissa paaye; aghi seti jaliya bhasam seti rall jaoo; bhi Teri keemat na pavhe haoo kevadh akhaa Naao.”

If I were to become a bird soaring through hundreds of heavens; and if I were to become invisible, not eating or drinking anything; even so I could never estimate Your Value. How can I ever describe the Greatness of Your Name?

“Pankhi hoye ke je bhavaa seh asmaani jaoo; nadri kisey na aavhu na kich piya na khaoo; bhi Teri keemat na pavhe hao kevadh aakha Naao”

In the final pada, Guru Ji describes a super scribe. If I had hundreds of thousands of stacks of paper and if I were to read and recite my love for the Lord; and if there was never any shortage of ink and I wrote with the agility and speed of the wind; even so I could never estimate Your Value. How can I ever describe the Greatness of Your Name?.

“Nanak kagadh lakh manaa parh parh kiche bhaoo; massu tott na aavheyi lekhan paun chalavho; bhi Teri keemat na pavhe hao kevadh aakha Naao”
