Guru Nanak Dev Ji shares some of His experiences on the Spiritual Path.

There comes a time when people think you are quite mad, while some say you must be a demon. Your speech, your focus, everything about you seems strange to them. Most do not realize you have become a deewana, a lover of the Lord. Deewana can mean lover and also insane. Sometimes the two meanings are fused as in crazy lover.

Guru Ji says He was called all kinds of names. Some called Him a ghost, some called Him a demon; some called Him the poor wretched mortal Nanak; they did not know He had become a crazy lover of the Lord, the King; and besides the Lord I knew of no other.

“Koyee akhey bhootna koyee kahey betalaa; koyee akhey aadmi Nanak vecharaa.”

“Bheya deewana Shah ka Nanak bauranaa; hao Har bin dujaa avar na janaa.”(rahao).

He alone can be said to be crazy if he has become insane in Fear of God. (i.e. he realises the strictness of God’s Hukam, and follows it meticulously (to the utter despair of others); he recognizes none other than the One Lord and Master (worldly conventions and beliefs mean nothing to him).

“Tao dewana jaaniye ja bhey dewana hoye; Eki Sahib bahra dujaa avar na jaaney koye.”

He is known to be insane if he works only to please the Lord; he recognizes the Hukam of the Lord, and knows all other clevernesses are of no use.

“Tao dewaana jaaniye je Eka kaar kamaaye; Hukam pechaney Khasam ka duji avar sianapp kaye.”

He is truly known to be insane when he falls in love with his Lord and Master; he sees himself as lowly and regards the rest of the world as good.

“Tao deewana jaaniye ja Sahib dharey pyaar; manda jaaney aap ko avar bhala sansaar.”
