Raag Malaar M.3.

Guru Ji tells us about the babeeha (Sikh) who adores Gurbani.

The babeeha sings Praises during a night wet with dew. Night is indicative that the babeeha (Sikh) is up at amrit vela. The belief about the mythological babeeha is that it cannot quench its thirst with any waters of the world. Only a dew drop falling into its open beak as it looks upwards, will quench all its thirsts. Thus, “bhinni” (dew -Bani) is indicative of being drenched with Bani.

The night is wet with dew; the babeeha sings the True Name with love and intuitive ease.

“Babeeha bhinni rein boliya sahaje Sach subhaye.”

The babeeha says this water (Bani) is my very life; without this water (Naam), I cannot survive.

“Eh jall mera jio hai jall bin rehan na jaaiye.”

Through the Guru’s Shabad is this water obtained and it erodes egotism from within.

“Gur Shabadi jall paaiye vicho aap gavaaihe.”

Nanak says I could not live without Him; the Satguru has led me to meet Him.

“Nanak jis bin chassa na jivdee so Satgur diya milaaiye”
