On 7th October 1708, Guru Gobind Singh Ji metha tek to SGGS Ji and declared “sabh Sikhan ko hukam hai Guru maniyo Granth.”

A hukamnama was taken. It was this Shabad. The first part of the Shabad is almost as if Guru Gobind Singh Ji is speaking.

“Sram thaka paaiye bisrama mitt gayee saglee dhayee.”

All my efforts are concluded; I am at peace and tranquil; all my journeys have ended. (From Patna to Anandpur, to Paonta, to Nada Sahib, to Chamkaur Sahib to Damdama Sahib to Delhi to Nanded).

“Ab mohe jivan padvi paaiye.”

I have achieved the mission of my life.

That is the historical background to the Shabad.

The Shabad applies to all Sikhs and describes one who has been blessed with Gur Parsad.

The Shabad starts with the Sikh exclaiming in joy – my destiny has awakened, I have received the Lord’s Grace and I now sing Praises of the Lord.

“Khuliya karam kirpa bheyi Thakur Kirtan Har Har gayee”

All my efforts have been completed. I have found peace and tranquility. My wanderings have ceased.

“Shram thakey paaya bisraama mit gayee saglee dhayee.”

I have now received the supreme status of my life; the Primal Lord, the Architect of my destiny is in my consciousness as I am in the Sanctuary of the Saints (Guru).

“Ab mohe jeevan padvi payee; cheet aayo man Purakh Bidhataa Santan ki sarnayee” (rahao).

Lust, anger, greed and emotional attachment have been eradicated; all my enemies have been eliminated; He is always present, here and now, watching over me. He is never far away.

“Kaam krodh lobh moh nivarey nivrey sagal beraaiye; sadh hajur hajar hai najar kathe na bheyo duraaiye.”

My faith has been fulfilled I am in peace and tranquility. The Saints (Guru) are my Support. He purifies sinners in an instant. His Glory cannot be expressed.

“Sukh sheetal sarda sabh puri hoye Sant sahayee; paavan patit kiye khin bhittar mahima kathan na jaaiye.”

I have become fearless. All fears have departed. The Feet of the Lord (Bani) are my Shelter; I sing Praises of the Lord and Master. Night and day Nanak is lovingly focussed upon Him.

“Nirbhao bheye sagal bhao khoye Gobind Charan Otaiyee; Nanak jas gavhe Thakur ka rein dinnas liv layee.”
