Raag Suhi M.1.
We have been gifted with a human body. It is a rare chance to Unite with the Lord, and break off the cycle of reincarnation. Every act we do with our mind (mann), our tongues (bach), or our hands and feet/bodies (karam), carries karmic consequences. Only Naam done by “mann, bach, karam” does not bring any karmic weight. On the contrary Naam cuts our lekhas, cleanses us, enlightens us, and slowly, with Gur Parsad, leads us to Union.
In this Shabad, Guru Ji tells us about various practices by different sects and concludes that without Naam, any practice is a wasted practice and the body does not achieve its higher purpose.
The yogis practice yoga while the pleasure seekers indulge themselves; the austere ones practice tough disciplines, while some scrub themselves at pilgrim shrines.
“Jogi hovay jogveh bhogi hovay khaaye; tappiya hovay tapp kare tirath malh malh naaye.”
(Instead of these methods),
O Beloved, if only someone would come, sit with me, and Speak some News of You. (Share Naam with me).
“Tera sadra sunijay bhayi je ko bahay alaaye.” (rahao).
As one plants so does he have to harvest and eat the profits of his efforts; in the world hereafter he is not called to account if he goes with the Insignia of Naam (Mark of Approval).
“Jaisa bijay so lunhe jo khattay so khaaye; aggay puch na hovaiye je sann Nishaney jaaye.”
One’s reputation builds on the actions he does; (of all his actions), that breath is a wasted one where he does not think of the Lord.
“Taiso jaisa kaandiye jaisee kaar kamaaye; jo damm chit na aavaiye so damm birtha jaaye.”
I would sell my body if someone would purchase it; (since) Nanak says, such a body is of no use if it does not contain the True Name.
“Eh tann vechi beh karee je ko laye vikaaiye; Nanak kamm na aavaiye jit tann nahi Sacha Naao.”
