Raag Sorath – Slok M.3 from Sorath Ki Vaar M.4

There are many manmukhs. They have taken the Sharan of the Satguru, but they follow the dictates of their own minds, rather than the Guru’s matt.

Then, there is another set of persons, who become bemukh from the Satguru. They seek help from other sources, follow the advice of tantrics, and sakats, and indulge in all sorts of practices trying to harness lower energies of maya. Such a person may outwardly have all the appearances of a Sikh, but internally he gets broken from the Sharan of the Satguru. He will need to re attach himself to the Charan of the Satguru and ask forgiveness, plead with the Satguru to remove all those energies he has loaded himself with, and move on in life.

In Anand Sahib, pauri 21, we are told:

“Je ko Gur te vemukh hovay bin Satgur mukat na paaye; paave mukat ne hor thay koyee pucho bibekiya jaaiye; anek jooni bhram aave vin Satgur mukat na paaye.”

He has to attach himself to the Satguru’s Feet (Bani) again – “Laag Charnee.”

“Firr mukat paaye laag charni Satgur Shabad sunaaiye.”

Those who turn their faces from the Satguru, suffer in sorrow and bondage; again and again, they fail to meet the Lord. They are born only to die.

“Satgur te jo moh firey se badhe dukh sahaiye; firr firr milan na paiynee jameh te marr jayeh.”

The disease of restlessness (of the mind) does not depart, and they find only pain and more pain.

“Sahsa rogh na chodaeyi dukh hi me dukh paaye.”

Nanak says, if the Gracious Lord forgives, then He leads you to the Shabad (Guru), which results in Meeting and Merger.

“Nanak Nadree baksh laye Shabdey melh milaiye.”

Satgur ki Bani is agaad bodh. It applies in Infinite ways. Some scholars hold the view that the references to death are about spiritual death only as in “aakha jeeva visrey marr jaoo.” Certainly, it applies in such situations while a person is still alive, but dead internally on a spiritual level.

But, Gurbani applies “athey othey ” too, i.e. the references also mean dying again and again in the cycle of reincarnation.
