Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji expresses this Shabad where a Sikh looks at the entire world and shares what he sees. In this whole world you will not find a single true friend; there is a selfish streak in everyone and the world is stuck in its own pleasures. When trouble comes, no one is with you.

“Eh jag meet na dekhiyo koyee; sagal jagat apne sukh lageyo dukh mai sang na hoyee” (rahao).

Wives, friends, children and relatives all are attached to some form of wealth; when they see one penniless they forsake his company and run away.

“Dara meet poot sanbhandhi sagrey dhan ko laggey; Jab hi nirdhan dekhiyo nar ko sang chadh sabh bhaggey.”

What should I instruct this crazy mind of mine which is affectionately attached to them?; the Lord is the Master of the lowly, Destroyer of all fears, and I have failed to sing His Praises.

“Kaho kaha yeh man baurey ko ein seyo neh lagaieyo; Deena Nath sagal Bhey Bhanjan jas ta ko bisraeiyo”

Guru Ji uses a startling example to describe the stubborn bent of the mind. The mind is like a dog’s tail which will never straighten out no matter how many methods are used.

“Suan puch jio bheyo na sudho bahut jattan mai kinno”

Only God can intervene to put things right. In the final line therefore, the Guru guides the Sikh to pray to God. Thus, Nanak says, Lord please uphold the honor of Your Innate Nature; I chant Your Name.

“Nanak laaj birdh ki rakho Naam Tuharo leeno.”
