Guru Ji scolds a wayward person. He has spent his entire life in evil deeds, and did not take to Naam. There are many Shabads which scold us. But, it is a scolding from a loving Parent, who always wishes us well. Our approach to such Shabads which contain reprimands should be “je Gur chirhkay ta mithaa laage…..” (Ang 757).

Guru Ji addresses the mind of the Sikh. O mind, what evil mindedness have you developed?; you are engrossed in the pleasures of other women, enjoy slander, and have not worshipped the Lord at all.

“Mann re kaun komatt teh linee; par dara nindiya rass rechiyo Raam bhagat neh kinee.” (rahao).

You did not find out the Path to liberation, but ran around chasing after wealth; you have not gathered anything that will endure with you, till the very end you have entrapped yourself in bondages.

“Mukat panth jaaneyo teh nahin dhan joran ko dhaaeiya; antt sang kaahu nahi deena birtha aap bandhaaieya.”

You have not meditated upon the Lord, nor served the Guru, or His humble servants, nor has any spiritual wisdom welled up in you; the Immaculate Lord (beyond maya) dwells within you, yet you search for Him in the wilderness.

“Na Har bhajiyo neh Gur jann seviyo neh upjiyo kach gyanaa; ghat hi mahe Niranjan tere teh khojat udhianaa.”

You have wandered through many births and exhausted yourself, but have not found enlightenment which leads to Eternity; Nanak advises – now that you have obtained this human life, meditate upon the Lord’s Lofty State (i.e. aspire to Unite with the Lord in Sachkhand, within yourself).

“Bahut janam bharmatt teh hareyo asthirr matt nahi paiyee; manas deh paaye padh Har bhaj Nanak baat bataiyee.”
