SGGS Angg 610.
Raag Sorath M.5
A Sikh expresses his gratitude to the Saints (Guru).
Although the word Sant is used loosely nowadays, in SGGS Ji, Sant refers to someone who is the very image of the All Pervading Lord.
Bhagat Kabir Ji says,
“Santa ko koyee mat nindo Sant Raam hai eko.” (Ang 793).
Prahlad Ji is referred to as a Sant. (Angg 856).
“Sant Prahlad ki paij jinn rakhee harnaksh nakh bidreiyo.”
Bhagat Kabir Ji is called a Sant. (Angg 870).
“Kya apradh Sant hai kinaa.”
At Angg 392, Guru Arjun Dev Ji tells us the true Sant can erase millions of your sins.
“Kote kote aggh katanharaa.”
Thus, Sant is used for a Saint who is of blessed calibre, and beyond the snares of maya.
“Kaula bapree Santi chalee.” (Ang 392).
Taking the above into account, Sant in SGGS Ji refers to the Satguru, or those rare Saints who have received Gur Parsad.
“Pura Gur akhiyo ja ka mantar; Amrit dhrist pekhay hoye Sant.” (Sukhmani Sahib. Astp-18).
In the Shabad above, I have accordingly taken references to the Sant as references to the Satguru.
The Sikh says, my body and wealth belongs to the Saints (Guru), and my mind too belongs to the Saints; by the Grace of the Saints, I meditate upon the Lord’s Name, and all comforts come to me.
“Tann Santan ka dhan Santan ka mann Santan ka keeya; Sant Parsad Har Naam dhieaaya sarab kusal tabh theeya.”
Besides the Saints, there is no other True Giver; whoever takes to the Sanctuary of the holy Saints is carried across.
“Santan binn avar na Data beeya; jo jo Sharan parey Sadhu ki so pargramee keeya.” (rahao).
Millions of sins are erased by serving the humble Saints and lovingly singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord; one finds peace here, and hereafter, your face is radiant. It is by great fortune that one keeps company of the humble Saints.
“Kote praadh mitay jann sewa Har kirtan rass gaiyeh; eiha sukh agay mukh ujjal jann ka sang vadbhagee paaiyeh.”
I have only one tongue, while the Lord’s humble servant is filled with countless virtues, how can I ever adequately sing his praises; the Inaccessible, Beyond Comprehension, and Eternal Lord is found in the Sanctuary of the Saints (Guru).
“Rasna ek anek gunn puran jann ki ketak upmaa kehiye; Aggam Agochar Sadh Abhinasee Saran Santan ki lehiye.”
I am without merits, lowly, an orphan, full of sins, I long for the Shelter of the Saints (Guru); Nanak says, I am drowning in the dark deep pit of household attachments. Please help me Lord.
“Nirgunn neech anaath apradhee ote Santan ki ahee; boodhat moh greh andh koop me Nanak leho nibahee.”
