Raag Assa M.5
As you delve deeper into Gurbani, an inner joy wells up within you. It is a rass, an intoxicating feeling of cheer, confidence, honesty, a feeling of profound optimism based on Truth. Guru Ji describes the feeling of rass which comes from Naam. If you do not get this rass, Guru Ramdas Ji tells us.
“Jin Har Har har rass Naam na paaya te bhaagheen jam paas.” (Rehiras – Angg 10).
One who drinks in the Sublime Essence of the Lord, it remains forever in him; while other essences wear off instantly; those who get intoxicated with this Essence, their mind is always in ecstasy; other essences bring only anxiety.
“Har ras pivat sadh hi rataa; aan rasaa khin meh leh jataa; Har rass ke matey sada anand; aan rasa meh viapey chind.”
One who drinks in the Divine Essence (of Naam), is enraptured and intoxicated; all other essences are of no value.
“Har rass pivay almastt matvara; aan rasa sabh hoshey re.” (rahao).
It is not possible to state the value of the Divine Essence; this Essence permeates the homes of the holy; it cannot be purchased even by spending thousands of millions; only by one’s destiny does one obtain it.
“Har rass ki keemat kahi na jaaye; Har rass Sadhu haat samaaye; lakh karori milhe na keh; jisse parapat tis hi deh.”
Nanak says, tasting it renders you wonder-struck; Nanak says, this relish is given by the Guru; here and hereafter, this joyous relish does not leave him; Nanak is enraptured and mixed thoroughly in the Divine essence.
“Nanak chakh bhaye bismaad; Nanak Gur te aaya saad; eit utt katt chodh na jaaye; Nanak gidha Har rass mahe.”
