Raag Gauree (Gauri) Bhagat Kabir Ji.

Bhagat Ji gives Divine Advice (Naam) to all mortals.

In the rahao, Bhagat Ji says without bhagti human life ebbs away in vain; without sadhsangat, without bhajan bandgi of Naam, one does not abide in the Truth.

“Bhagat bin birthay janam geyo; sadhsangat bhajan bin kahi na Sach rehiyo” (rahao).

Bhagat Ji starts the Shabad with an example of the monkey. It grabs some grains and gets it’s gripped hand stuck in a tiny hole. If he releases his grip he can free himself. But greed drives him to keep his cupped hand gripped. Similarly, man’s every action becomes a noose around his neck.

“Jio kapp ke kar mustt chanan ki lobhd na tyag deyo; jo jo karam kiye lalach seyo te firr gareh pareyo”

In the 2nd pada Bhagat Ji speaks of the flower which blossoms in the wilderness with no one to enjoy its fragrance; so do people lead wasted lives again and again in reincarnation, eventually gobbled up by Death.

“Jio udhiyaan kusam parfulatt kinhe na ghrao leyo; taisay bharmat anik jon me firr firr kaal heyo”

Man gets ensnared in family life and sensual pleasures. He does not realise that wealth, youth, children and spouse given by the Lord are a passing show. The word “pekhan” is used as in “aiso eh sansar pekhna….” (Ang 855) – the world is merely a Drama.

“Eiha dhan joban aur sut dara pekhan ko jo dyo; ein hi mahe atakk jo urjay eindri prerr leyo”

The setting of this Drama is described next. Age is the fire, the body is a house of straw. In all four corners this play is being performed.

“Audh anall tann tin ko mandar chau diss thatt theyo”

The solution? – In the last line Bhagat Ji says to cross over the terrifying world ocean I have taken the Sanctuary of the Satguru. (Shabad).

“Kahe Kabir bhey sagar taran ko mai Satgur ote leyo”
