SGGS Angg 220.
Raag Gauree (Gauri M.9)
Guru Ji tells man true peace is found in God’s Sharan. Guru Ji further tells us what makes one a gyani – an enlightened one and who becomes mukat – liberated.
The 5th line is rather intricate and with respect, I would give the bisraam after “eh sabh”, as follows.
“Surag narak amrit bikh eh sabh, tio kanchan aur paisaa”.
For some reason, the paath given in the Tika by Bhai Harbans Singh and the Darpan by Professor Sahib Singh is.
“Surag narak amrit bikh eh samm, tio kanchan aur paisaa. “i.e. the word “samm” is used instead of “sabh”.
The Shabad Arth by the SGPC uses the word “sabh”, so does Bhai Vir Singh’s Santhya Pothi and this is the paath on the internet.
Holy ones, only in the Sanctuary of the All Pervading Lord, will you get true joyous peace; the blessings of reading the Vedas and Puranas (scriptures), is that you may meditate upon the Lord.
“Sadho Raam Sharan bisrama; Bedh Puran parhe ko eh gunn simre Har ko Naama.” (rahao).
To be the very embodiment of the Divine Lord, you must not be touched by greed, emotional attachment to maya, nor must you serve evil or evil persons; and you must not be affected by happiness or sorrow.
“Lobh moh maya mamtaa funh aur bikhiyan ki sewa; harakh sogh parsay jeh naheen so murat hai Deva.”
Heaven and hell, ambrosial nectar and poison, gold and copper, these are all alike to them; praise and slander are the same to them as are greed and attachment.
“Surag narak amrit bikh eh sabh tio kanchan aur paisaa; ustat ninda eh samh ja ke lobh moh funh taisaa.”
Those not bound by pleasure and pain, are the truly wise (enlightened ones); Nanak says, those mortals who have these qualities, are truly liberated.
“Dukh sukh eh badhe jeh naheen teh tum janho gyani; Nanak mukat tahe tum manho eh bidh ko jo pranee.”
