SGGS Angg 70
Raag Sri Raag M.5
Guru Ji Arjun Dev Ji’s famous Shabad. When everything else fails, the Lord’s Name never lets you down.
This Shabad has 9 padas.
Guru Ji says, when you are confronted by terrible hardships, and no one offers you any support; when your friends turn into enemies, and even your relatives have deserted you; all supports have been shattered, and all hopes dashed; if you remember the Lord, He will not let even a hot wind scorch you.
“Ja ko mushkil att baney dhoyee koyee na de; laggu hoye dushmanna saak bhi bhaj khalley; sabho bhajey aasra chukey sabh asraao; chit aave oss Parbrahm laggey na tatti vaao.”
The Master is the Power of the powerless; He does not come and go; He is Eternal and Permanent. Through the Guru’s Shabad the True Lord is known.
“Sahib nitaniyaa ka Taan; Aaye na Jehee Thirh Sada Gur Shabadee Sach jaan.” (rahao).
If one is weakened by the pains of hunger and poverty; has no money in his pockets, and has no one who offers him support; no one bothers to fulfill your wishes or hopes, and none of your works ever get accomplished; (even under those circumstances), if you remember the Lord, you can obtain the Eternal Kingdom.
“Je ko hovay dublaa nang bhukh ki pirh; damrha palley na paveh na ko devay dheer; suarath suaoo na ko karey na kich hovay kaaj; chit aave oss Parbrahm ta Nichall hovay Raaj.”
When you are plagued by great and excessive anxieties, and diseases cling to the body; when you are wrapped up in family life, reeling between bouts of joy and sorrow; when you are wandering about in all four directions but cannot get a wink of peaceful sleep; (even under those terrible conditions), if you remember the Lord, your body and mind will be cooled and soothed.
“Ja ko chinta bahut bahut dehi viappey rogh; gharist kotumb paletiya kadey harkh kadey sogh; gaunn karey chau kuntt ka kahi na bessan soye; chit aave oss Parbrahm tan mann sheetal hoye.”
If you are under the grip of lust, anger and worldly attachments, or a greedy miser in love with your wealth; if you have committed the four cardinal sins and other mistakes, even if you are a murderous fiend; even if you have never taken the time to equip yourself with any graces by listening to sacred books, hymns and poetry; (even so), if you remember the Lord and contemplate Him even for a moment, you can swim across.
The Brahmins preached there were 4 cardinal sins. Killing a Brahmin, killing a cow, killing an infant girl, living off someone else’s immoral earnings. These are also mentioned at Angg 1413, Slok no 4.
“Kam krodh moh vass kiya kirpan lobh pyaar; charey kilvikh unn aghh kiye hova asurr sangaar; pothee geet kavit kich kadey na karan dhareya; chit aave oss Parbrahm ta nimakh simrat tareeiya.”
