SGGS Angg 700

Raag Jaithshree (Jaitsree) M.5

Guru Ji tells us all the relationships and friendships we hold so dear, are very short lasting. Only Naam is your True Friend here and hereafter. But a rare one understands this.

Guru Ji poses a question. Does anyone know who is our True Friend in this world?; it is a rare person who is blessed with this insight by the Lord. Such a person leads an immaculate lifestyle.

“Koyee jaane kavan eiha jag meet; jis hoye kirpaal soyee bidh bujhai ta ki nirmal reet.” (rahao).

Mother, father, spouse, children, lovers, friends and siblings meet, having some connection from previous lives but none are of any help at the end.

“Maat pita banita sut bandap isst meet aur bhai; purab janam ke milhe sanjogi anteh ko na sahayee.”

Pearl necklaces, gold, rubies and diamonds, may please the mind, but they are all perishable (maya); one suffers much agony to get all these, but they give no contentment.

“Mukatt maal kanak laal heera mann ranjan ki maya; ha ha kartt bihanee avdeh ta mai santokh na paaya.”

One may have elephants, chariots, horses as fast as the wind, wealth, land, and armies of four kinds (land troops, cavalry, seamen, snipers), none of these will go with him. He must get up and depart naked.

“Hastt rath assav pavan tejh dhanee, bhumann chaturangaa; sang na chaliyo ein me kachuve uthh sidaieyo naanga.”

What should one do then?

Guru Ji says, the Lord’s Saints are lovers of their Beloved. Sing the Praises of the Lord in their company; Nanak says, in the society of the Saints (Sadhsanggat), you shall find peace in this world, and your face shall be radiant hereafter.

“Har ke Sant Pria Pritam Prabh ke ta kai Har Har gaaiyeh; Nanak eiha sukh aggey mukh ujjal sang Santan ke paaiyeh.”

On September 23, 2024, Bhai Ji further elaborated on this Shabad:

Gurbani tells us God is in charge of all relationships.
There are two aspects to relationships.
Relationship with God. Relationships with each other.
In both cases He alone decides.
“Sanjogh vijogh doye kaar chalaiye..” (Japji Sahib).

It is our haumai which makes us think we have established any relationship or closeness.

In this Shabad, Guru Ji says all these relationships are determined by Him, according to our past karmas.
Mother, father, spouse, children, lovers (including the crushes you develop during teenage), friends and siblings meet, having been associated in some previous time or lives. None of these relationships however are of any help at the very end when one has to give lekhas.
“Maat Pita banita sut bandap isst meet aur bhai; purab janam ke milhe sanjoghi antteh ko na sahaiyee.”

At SGGS Ji Angg 1280, in Malar Ki Vaar, Guru Ji says, He created the earth and reflects upon the acts of all those created in His Kudrat.
“Aape jagat upaaiye ke Kudrat kare bichaar.”

The manmukhs (those who acted on the impulses of their own minds, in haumai), are called to render accounts hereafter, and receive severe punishment.
“Manmukh agge lekha mangiye bahuti hovay maar.”

The gurmukhs (those who remained in the Guru’s Sharan and took to Naam, and lived in humility), accounts are settled with dignity and they are rewarded with the Treasure of His Praises.
“Gurmukh patt seyo likhe nibrhe bakshe sifatt bhandaar.”

At the time to render accounts (lekha), no one can reach there and offer a helping hand, nor will anyone heed your cries.
“Other haath na uprhe kook na suniye pukaar.”

The exception is for the Gurmukh. The Satguru stands there as your Best Friend, and saves you in your final moments.
“Othe Satgur Beli hovay kadh leh antee vaar.”

These mortals should serve no one besides the Satguru (Shabad), or the Creator, who are Superior and above all.
“Enna jantaa nu horh sewa nahi Satgur sirh Kartar.”
